How Do You Find Out What You Need to Know About Marketing Your Art?!

Whom can you turn to?!

Finding Answers Should be Easy…

Ha! That’s a hot one!

Wasn’t the internet supposed to make finding answers quick and instant?

You can spend hours down the Google Rabbithole, but beyond cursory explainations, it’s all the same old muck, isn’t it?

Here’re some of the problems:

Pontificators

These are those who anoint themselves experts at something just because someone asked them. The phrase “I don’t know” is foreign to them, and they’ll tell you what you should do regardless of their complete lack of experience or ability.

As the saying goes “A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.”

Oddly enough, a high percentage of semi-established artists do this. And art teachers and instructors.

Getting marketing help from someone who hasn’t had any sales success is akin to taking financial advice from someone who’s broke.

Those Who Know But Won’t Tell

Have you ever met a successful artist and tried to ask for advice?

Of course not; they’re too busy to talk to anyone not breathing the same rarified air. In fact, they have people to keep from being bothered by this sort of thing…

And if you DID happen to get an audience? Did they get evasive? Rude? Some even go so far as to spread misinformation (seriously).

Best case, you got some kind of quick, feel-good soundbite that didn’t get you very far, such as “Find your ideal client”. (Great, HOW?!)

Art and Marketing Can be Hard to Find in the Same Place

Lots of great artists out there. Lots of genius marketers too. But finding the same high-level skills in the same place is as rare as udders on a duck.

The landscape is littered with the careers of artists who put their faith in a marketer who – even well-meaning ones – while knowing quite a bit, couldn’t sell any art. Under the worst scenarios, the marketer sunk to trying to sell art on the prospects of future appreciation (run, don’t walk away).

For every artist that misunderstands marketing, there’s a marketer who may know “the mechanics”, but doesn’t get the specific nuances that happen in a successful art sale or career.

 False Prophets

These are those who make their living selling advice, not artwork.

They invariably fall into two camps:

  1. Artists who can’t make it on their own art sales (those who can do, those who can’t, teach), and
  2. Marketers who thought the “art marketing space” was a good niche to sell into.

An example? Coaches who distract artists by selling courses on how to build social media presences to “build a community”, which of course can be very useful, but at the end of the day, where’s the transactions? Thousands of artists have worked their butts off to build huge followings…but aren’t selling a thing.

Introducing our new course: The Fly on the Wall Q and A Videos!

Several months ago…

Owen Garratt ran an exclusive coaching group called The Fly on The Wall Coaching and Mentoring Group.

Part of that coaching group was a weekly Q and A – artists in the group submitted their questions and Owen answered them at depth in a weekly video.

These Q and A videos were by far the most popular part of the coaching!

So we decided to open the Q and A portion to the public

And continue to build on its success by allowing artists who take the video package to have the opportunity to have their OWN questions answered!

The resource will continue to grow!

This is the most significant and comprehensive training we’ve done thus far…!

The Fly on The Wall Q and A Video Sessions answers all manner of artist’s questions:

Laurie Mills

“I’ve been a follower of Owen for years – he is expert at always keeping the focus where it must be – on the customer, with an eye toward transacting with that customer. I don’t care if you’ve been selling art for years and years, TRYING to sell for years, or wading into commerce for the first time, Owen has been there. Best of all, he is more than willing to share his knowledge and experience!!

Do yourself a favor, and listen to what he says!”

“$79?! “Egad, what makes it worth THAT much?!”

FOTW members paid $69 each month for these videos – over $500 in all – but three more points:

1) Extra-specialized knowledge and strategies that can sell more of your art than ever!

  • Uber-advanced sales psychology
  • Marketplace insight by an artist who’s in the trenches with you
  • Pricing strategies
  • How to find the ideal client
  • How to bundle offers so that people buy more than one piece
  • What’s the Single BIGGEST Factor in the decision to purchase art? (I guarantee that you won’t hear this anywhere else.  It’s rough. It’s rather unpleasant. Artists don’t like it. But here it is…)

2)  It can pay for itself tenfold by saving you from expensive blunders such as:

  • Getting your pricing wrong
  • Spending foolishly on Facebook ads
  • Alienating people with your story
  • Getting scammed by “mysterious buyers” and too-good-to-be-true offers for you to show your art
  • Publishing reproductions the wrong way and for the wrong reasons
  • Getting sued for ignoring copyright law because “everyone else does it”

3) How many more pieces of art do you need to sell to get back what you paid for the course?

Like, one?

If you sell smaller ticket items, how much more do you need to sell in an entire year?

Like, a couple?

Even if you ONLY sell one more piece, you should be ahead of the game.

(and if you’re selling your art for less than that, there’re videos on pricing that you really need to see!)

One Time Charge. Lifetime Access. Sheer Awesomeness!

So who’s Owen Garratt, and what does he have to offer?

Owen is Uniquely Qualified to Help Artists

  • Full-Time Artist for over 20 Years
  • He Sells his OWN Art
  • No Galleries, No Agents, No Publishers
  • Internationally Recognized as a World Class Marketer
  • Has done portraits for celebrities such as Gene Simmons, Joan Rivers, George Foreman, Adam West, Kathy Ireland, Cal Ripken Jr., Emmitt Smith, Penn Jillette, and William Shatner, and more.

QUESTION:  Where else are you going to get this kind of real world experience and education?

If you’re going to get a little advice, does it make sense to get it from someone who’s never actually made their living as an artist, or get it from someone who’s been doing it for over 20 years?

“The Fly on the Wall Q and A Videos was – and is – a fascinating example of what’s possible in education!

The fact that artists wrote in and ask questions means, essentially, that the course was created by artists. It’s what artists REALLY want to know, not just the things the facilitator (me) wanted to talk about. 🙂

I was surprised by how much I got out of creating these videos. The process of clarifying, verbalizing, and sharing the knowledge and experience was of great value to me personally, and I’m grateful for the opportunity!”

FAQ about The Fly on The Wall Q and A Videos

How is Owen qualified to answer all of these questions?

In addition to being a World Class Artist, Owen is internationally recognized among marketers as being at the pinnacle in a wide array of marketing disciplines.

This means that not only does Owen have a tremendous amount of knowledge, he also has connections among the top marketers around the world, so if he doesn’t know an answer, he can find out, and quickly.

Owen became an expert because he needed the skills to sell his own artwork, and now he’s ready to share what he’s learned with other artists.

On a side note, Owen’s IQ is 148+, and he placed 3rd in the season two finale (against two Ph.D.’s) on “Canada’s Greatest Know-it-All” on the Discovery Channel!

If the information is so good, why isn’t Owen keeping it to himself?

Why would Owen not share? Do you think that he could sell all the art in the world? Of course not. Humanity has an effectively infinite ability to consume artwork. In over 20+ years Owen has barely scratched the surface, so why fear competition from other artists?

The question touches on something called “Zero Sum” thinking, which is “if one person has something, then someone else doesn’t have it”. It’s outdated thinking that exploits artist’s “Fear of Lack”. When an artist sells a piece of art, it doesn’t mean Owen will somehow sell a piece less, and vice versa.

In fact, it’s more likely that sharing and helping artists will do nothing but add to Owen’s career.

How does the course work?

Artists who get The Fly on the Wall Q and A Videos will have access in the courses area, right here on the Marketing Tools for Artists website. A password is emailed to you (and you can change it), and you login to the ‘My Courses’ section – you can see it in the menu bar at the top of the page.

If you can watch a YouTube video, you can watch The Fly on the Wall Q and A Videos!

Also, you can download the audio and transcription of each module to take anywhere you’d like.

If you already have taken other courses, you don’t need another password: everything will be waiting for you in the ‘My Courses’ area!

What does it cost to get The Fly on the Wall Q and A Videos?

The Fly on the Wall Q and A Videos is currently available for only $79 in U.S. dollars, one time, no recurring fees, and either PayPal or credit cards may be used.

How do I ask my questions, and how are they answered?

There is a simple submission form in The Fly on the Wall Q and A Videos section in your “My Courses” page.

Please do NOT email your questions; form submissions have their own specific process. Emailing will not be faster, and emailed questions may be missed, and so not be answered…!

As questions come in, Owen will record new videos to answer them, and post them along with the other videos.

Do I have to reveal my name or talk about myself?

Not unless you want to.

We respect your anonymity if you wish us to.

Most artists thus far don’t mind sharing their names, where they’re from, their websites etc., and if you have a specific website question, it’s helpful to be able to look at it…!

But it’s whatever you’re comfortable with.

Can I get The Fly on the Wall Q and A Videos on DVD?

Sorry, but no.

Here’re the benefits of doing it digitally:

  • The hard costs of producing DVDs and printed materials would add greatly to the cost of the course.
  • There’d also be shipping charges…
  • There’d be a delay in getting the course to you due to shipping…
  • There’s less environmental impact – no discs, shipping materials, disc cases, warehousing, etc.
  • You’d be stuck to a DVD player or computer with a player; by taking the course digitally, you can watch anywhere there’s a signal, and on any device!

The pictures of the course show computer screens, tablets, and a phone. Are these included in the course?

I can’t believe we have to say this, but no, of course, the electronics aren’t included! The Fly on the Wall Q and A Videos is a digital course, accessed on this website. The screens shows are just for graphical interest and to demonstrate ways you can access the videos.

Nice try though!  🙂

Do you guarantee results?

It would be extremely irresponsible of us to make ANY kinds of promises as to results or income. Results and examples aren’t typical for artists, of course. We, and this should be obvious, can’t guarantee how any particular artist’s work will sell. No statement of results or income is made or implied. Individual results may vary. We love our artists, but do not take any fiduciary role on their behalf.

We provide the best advice we’re able to, based on our hard-earned knowledge and experience, but ultimately, each artist is responsible for his or her own results.
