Managing Your Art and Gallery Info

by Owen Garratt | The Effective Artist

Keeping organized is one of the Most Important Things an artist can do.

But most artists suck at it. And they know it.

The problem is when they adopt it as part of their personality – some even going so far as to joke about it!

Why artists resist organizing themselves (not counting lunacy):

  • They think it’s somehow limiting or restricting
  • They think they’re so far gone that sorting themselves out is overwhelming, if not impossible
  • They’re not sure how to go about it, or what to do

They think it’s limiting

“I just ‘go with the flow’.  Rules and structure stifles creativity”.

Sorry, this is just plain B.S. and wrong thinking, and artists that cling to it are making excuses (there, I said it).

It’s impossible to make the most out of your career without:

  1. A plan
  2. Some structure to support our efforts
  3. Some order to reduce bottlenecks and make things smooth

Structure IS freedom!

If you know where things are, how things get done, and can access information in an instant…

  • You’re free from clutter in your environment and your mind,
  • You do things ONCE and let the systems take over, which frees up mental and creative abilities and reduces stress,
  • You’re not rummaging, searching, pulling your hair, or cursing because “It’s around here somewhere”…

They think it’s too late

Better late than never, and if you haven’t gotten proactive lately, it feels pretty great. Managing your art doesn’t have to be a drag, and the payoff is huge!

They’re not sure what to do

The trick is to use the right tool for the job… and we’ve found a dashed good one to help artists!

Managing Your Art isn’t difficult: in the following video I interview Alice Whitfield from Artwork Archive.

We talk about:

  • What organization means when you have it
  • Some of the problems artists have in organizing themselves
  • Why it’s not only safe, it’s a HUGE benefit to use The Cloud
  • Why technology is FINALLY useful and easy (the .com crash not only got rid of some terrible business ideas, it also told those propellorheads to make things, y’know, usable)
  • and we introduce Artwork Archive – a terrific new tool specifically for artists…!
